Apple’s Market Share

Daring Fireball makes a good argument that Apple Computer’s ~2% market share isn’t as dire as it looks.

Heh. I had the exact same thought today when looking at the BuyMusic.com “windows and explorer only. no [irish] macs or mozillas need apply” page.
The personal computer market slowed down much earlier and much faster in terms of new vs. replacement purchases than the corporate market. As the use of PCs everywhere exploded so the share of home PCs as a share of the total market shrank. That is the primary reason Apple accounts for only 2% of the total market.
However, that does not take away from the fact that their unit shipments are basically flat-to-lower with no uptick in sight. I do not think they are even competing in any emerging markets, so where is any growth going to come from? There are many wonderful things you can with a Mac, and one is hard-pressed to think of what you can do on a PC that you cannot do on a MAC (except games). At the same time the reverse is true – anything you can do on a Mac you can do on a PC. They are a company in search of a solution that if finding only gimmicks.

Con, the growth is going to come from them selling their iPods and music downloads, which generate a fraction of the revenue that Macs generate. What a joke!
