(I must be crazy talking about Oprah to my 90% male readership…) I think the movie The Secret is about to hit its tipping point. On Thursday Oprah Winfrey’s show will be all about that movie — or more specifically the topic of the movie which is the law of attraction. That law basically states that “whatever you focus on you get more of.” I saw the movie back in August after seeing a mention on another trader’s blog. What was most interesting about it is that it was nothing new. The movie crystallized concepts that I’ve read and heard about over the years.
One thing that really stood out to me was that focusing on a negative doesn’t work. A good example of that is when you see a football team with a big lead go into the dreaded “prevent defense“. Instead of continuing to play to win they start playing not to lose. We all know what typically happens next — the team blows the game. I’ve had similar experiences with trading. I always seem to get into trouble when I try to trade not to lose (scared money…). That causes me to adjust my stops just enough so that they get hit right before the stock reverses. Even though I realized that fact long before watching The Secret (hence my long-standing rule of not touching stops within an hour of setting them) I never thought of it in terms of attracting those stop outs because of my mindset.
Anyway, there are tons of applications of the law of attraction in all facets of life. I highly recommend watching the movie and/or the Oprah show on Thursday. Here’s some stuff to give you a better idea of what to expect:

I happened to catch that episode of Larry King live back in October while flipping through channels in a hotel room. (Something I never do at home thanks to TiVo.) The show got such a good response that Larry did a second Law of Attraction show:

It seems that about half of the movie is available on YouTube but you can stream the whole thing from the official website for about $5. I streamed it to my laptop and even over WiFi and the quality was excellent. I recommend going that route for the first viewing.

I see this as just another manifestation of the original– Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. that book was so far ahead of its time. until you read it, you can’t understand how many recent books/ideas have built off of his original principles.

I would like The the 1st show and the follow-up show I had seen the show and had access to the on oline video however when I went back to the site it was no longer available? Somebody just re-uploaded part 1. I’ve modified the link above. I suggest you go over to Google Video and download all the parts. The “Video iPod / Sony PSP” option worked well for me. As for the second show, try doing a search for “oprah secret huge reaction”. You can download all those segments as well. Once you’ve done that you should be able to burn them to a DVD.
